United States President Donald Trump on Saturday claimed credit for ending the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, thanking Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for “upholding" a peace agreement signed last August.

In a post on social media, Trump described the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict as a “nasty war" and said it was one of eight wars he had helped bring to an end. He asserted that the region has since moved toward “prosperity and peace."

Trump also announced that US Vice President JD Vance will travel to both Armenia and Azerbaijan in February to build on the peace process and advance what he termed the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity."

According to Trump, the planned engagement will focus on strengthening the US strategic partnership with Azerbaijan, pursuing a peaceful nuclear cooperation agreement with Armenia, advancing deals for American semiconductor companies, and facilitating the sale of US-made defence equipment to Azerbaijan, including body armour and boats.

Trump concluded his statement by reiterating his support for continued peace and cooperation in the region and thanking both leaders for their role in maintaining the agreement.

The agreement reached in August came after nearly four decades of conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the mountainous Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Under the agreement, the countries relinquished all claims to each other’s territory and are required to refrain from using force against one another and pledge to respect international law.

Earlier this week, Armenia said it would integrate its energy systems with Azerbaijan to enable the import and export of electricity under a US-backed initiative.
