Donald Trump vows the US will take control of Irans strategic Kharg Island, raising US Iran tensions and sparking fears of major disruption to global oil markets.

US President Donald Trump has escalated tensions with Iran by declaring that the United States would take control of Kharg Island, a small but highly strategic island that serves as the backbone of Iran’s oil export network.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the US would take Kharg Island and other key energy infrastructure points, claiming Washington could assume “total control" of Iran’s oil and gas markets. The remarks came amid renewed military exchanges and rising tensions between the two countries.
What Is Kharg Island?
Located in the northern Persian Gulf, around 55 kilometres off Iran’s coast, Kharg Island is Iran’s most important oil export terminal.
While relatively small in size, it plays an outsized role in the country’s economy. The island handles roughly 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports and serves as the main link between the country’s vast oil fields and international markets.
Oil from across Iran is transported via pipelines to Kharg Island, where it is stored and loaded onto tankers bound for customers around the world.
Why Is It So Important?
Kharg Island is widely regarded as Iran’s economic lifeline.
Analysts say the vast majority of Iran’s oil revenue flows through the island, making it one of the country’s most vulnerable strategic assets. Some estimates suggest that more than 90% of Iran’s oil exports are processed and shipped from Kharg’s terminals.
The island also hosts massive storage facilities, tanker-loading infrastructure and connections to Iran’s largest oil-producing regions. Its loading capacity is estimated at around 7 million barrels per day.
Why Does Trump Want It?
Control of Kharg Island would give the United States enormous leverage over Iran’s economy.
Experts note that disrupting operations on the island could significantly reduce Iran’s oil export earnings, which are a key source of government revenue. Because Iran relies heavily on oil sales, particularly exports to Asian markets, any prolonged disruption could have severe economic consequences for Tehran.
Trump has previously described Kharg Island as a critical pressure point and has warned that its oil infrastructure could become a target if tensions with Iran continue to escalate.
Impact on Global Oil Markets
The importance of Kharg Island extends beyond Iran.
Energy analysts warn that any attack, seizure or prolonged disruption of operations on the island could remove significant volumes of oil from global markets, potentially sending crude prices sharply higher.
Because much of Iran’s oil exports pass through Kharg before travelling via the Strait of Hormuz, instability around the island could further disrupt energy supplies at a time when global markets are already facing uncertainty due to conflict in the Gulf.
A Key Flashpoint in US-Iran Tensions
Kharg Island has increasingly emerged as one of the most strategically sensitive locations in the ongoing confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
While military installations on the island have previously come under attack, its oil infrastructure has largely remained operational because of concerns that any major disruption could trigger a global energy shock.
Trump’s latest remarks have once again put the spotlight on the island, underlining its importance not only to Iran’s economy but also to global energy security.
