The Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery has unveiled a new photographic portrait of US President Donald Trump, while removing most of the text that referenced his two impeachments and the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, according to a report by The Washington Post.

The White House shared an image of the updated “America’s Presidents" exhibit on its social media accounts, and Trump also promoted the portrait on Truth Social.

The photograph, taken by White House photographer Daniel Torok, shows Trump in black and white at the Resolute Desk, fists resting on the surface, looking directly at the camera.

“For the first time in history, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery has hung up an iconic photo taken by the White House honoring President Trump," White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said in a statement, The Hill reported.

“His unmatched aura will be seen and felt throughout the halls of the National Portrait Gallery." Ingle noted.

Trump’s new portrait replaced one of former President Joe Biden, which visitors previously saw first when entering the exhibit. Guests moving through the gallery in chronological order will see the portraits of all presidents, with Trump now displayed in a prominent position.

The previous Trump portrait, showing him with hands folded, had two small wooden plaques with the numbers “45" and “47," reflecting his two nonconsecutive terms—the first president to do so since Grover Cleveland.

The earlier display also included text noting his impeachments and the Capitol attack, but the new placard only lists his years in office. Other presidential portraits continue to include descriptive text, such as former President Bill Clinton’s mention of his impeachment.

Concetta Duncan, a National Portrait Gallery spokeswoman, told The Washington Post the museum is moving towards “tombstone labels," which provide only essential information about each portrait.

It is unclear if the recent changes were directed by the administration, though modifications were expected after Trump returned to the White House.
