President Donald Trump on Sunday reacted to the news that actor Sydney Sweeney, whose appearance in a new and controversial American Eagle ad has stirred criticism, is a registered Republican voter.

When Sweeney registered to vote in Florida in June 2024, nearly five months before Trump’s victory in last year’s presidential race, she listed her party affiliation as Republican, according to public records reviewed by BuzzFeed.

Asked to offer his reaction to the news, Trump said: “Oh, now I love her ad.”

“You’d be surprised at how many people are Republicans,” Trump continued. “If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.”

Sweeney has yet to comment on the revelation.

Both Sweeney and American Eagle have faced backlash over a new ad campaign that features the “Euphoria” actress, who has blond hair and blue eyes, wearing the brand’s denim alongside a tagline featuring wordplay on “jeans” and “genes,” which some critics interpreted as an allusion to eugenics, while others said glorified whiteness.

Many conservatives, though, including Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas), fiercely defended it. Trump’s White House Communications Director Steven Cheung labeled the criticism of the campaign as “cancel culture run amok.”

“This warped, moronic, and dense liberal thinking is a big reason why Americans voted the way they did in 2024,” Cheung wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “They’re tired of this bullshit.”

On Friday, American Eagle issued a statement defending the campaign.

“‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story,” the brand said. “We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”

Sweeney had previously drawn fire in 2022 after her brother, Trent Sweeney, posted photos of guests at their mother’s 60th birthday party wearing MAGA-style hats and “Blue Lives Matter” tops.

Sweeney sought to quell the criticism, claiming the reaction the pictures received was “wild.”

“An innocent celebration for my moms milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention,” she wrote on X at the time. “Please stop making assumptions.”
