US President Donald Trump used a state banquet in Beijing to make a lighthearted but expansive case for close ties between the United States and China, pointing to culture, trade and history as proof the relationship is far more connected than many assume.
Speaking after a day of high-level talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Donald Trump said the discussions were “extremely positive and productive" and praised what he called a “magnificent welcome" from his hosts. But it was his broader framing of US-China ties that stood out, as he mixed historical references with everyday cultural examples to argue the two countries are deeply interwoven.

Historic Links And Shared Storylines
Donald Trump described the US-China relationship as “one of the most consequential relationships in world history," tracing connections back centuries. He referenced early American trade through merchant Samuel Shaw, noted that Benjamin Franklin had cited Confucius in his writings, and pointed to President Theodore Roosevelt in discussions tied to institutions connected with China’s modern leadership.
Chinese Food In America Becomes A Talking Point
In one of the more striking moments of the speech, Donald Trump shifted to cultural exchange in everyday life, using food as an example of how closely the societies are linked. He noted that Chinese restaurants are now so widespread in the United States that they collectively outnumber the five largest American fast-food chains combined.

Basketball, Blue Jeans And Cultural Exchange
Donald Trump also pointed to shared cultural habits, saying Chinese consumers’ enthusiasm for basketball and blue jeans reflected how American culture has been embraced abroad. At the same time, he suggested that this exchange runs both ways, reinforcing what he described as a natural flow of influence between the world’s two largest economies. He said the US and China share values of “hard work," “courage" and “achievement," arguing that these common traits form a foundation for cooperation despite political differences.
“The world is a special world with the two of us united and together," Donald Trump said, summing up his broader message of interdependence.
