US President Donald Trump on Sunday said the man accused of attempting to storm the gala dinner he attended had written what he described as an anti-Christian manifesto.

“The guy is a sick guy," Trump told Fox News. “When you read his manifesto, he hates Christians."

He also claimed that concerns about the suspect had been raised earlier. “His sister or his brother actually was complaining about it. You know, they were even complaining to law enforcement. He was a very troubled guy."

Earlier in the day, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said that US President Donald Trump and members of his administration were likely the intended targets of the gunman who opened fire during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington.

According to officials, the attacker used a shotgun to fire at a Secret Service agent stationed at a security checkpoint inside the Washington Hilton hotel. The agent survived the attack, and the suspect was quickly overpowered and taken into custody at the scene.

After the incident, Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were immediately escorted out of the venue as a precaution.
