Donald Trump has said the conflict involving Iran is “very close to over," while indicating that Tehran is eager to strike an agreement, even as diplomatic efforts continue on multiple fronts across the Middle East.
Speaking to Fox News, Trump defended his actions in the conflict, arguing that decisive intervention prevented Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

“I had to divert, because if I didn’t do that, right now you would have Iran with a nuclear weapon, and if they had a nuclear weapon, you would be calling everybody over there ‘sir’. And you don’t want to do that," Trump said.
When asked whether the war was over, Trump indicated that hostilities were nearing an end but cautioned that developments were still unfolding.
“I think it’s close to over, yeah. I mean, I view it as very close to over. You know what? If I pulled up stakes right now, it would take them 20 years to rebuild that country. And we’re not finished. We’ll see what happens. I think they want to make a deal very badly," he added.
TALKS COULD RESUME SOON AMID DIPLOMATIC MOVEMENT
According to a report with AFP, Trump suggested that negotiations between Washington and Tehran could resume soon, telling The New York Post that a new round of talks may take place in Pakistan within days.
The comments come after earlier discussions failed to produce a breakthrough, with differences persisting over Iran’s nuclear programme.
The diplomatic push coincides with parallel developments involving Israel and Lebanon, which have agreed to initiate direct negotiations following talks in Washington.
The discussions were mediated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and mark a rare instance of formal engagement between the two countries, which have technically remained at war for decades.
The negotiations were opposed by Hezbollah, which launched rocket attacks into northern Israel as the meeting was underway.
Hezbollah has been a central actor in the widening regional conflict, having attacked Israel in support of Iran, triggering Israeli strikes and a ground offensive in southern Lebanon.
PRESSURE ON TEHRAN CONTINUES THROUGH NAVAL BLOCKADE
Even as diplomatic efforts continue, the United States has intensified pressure on Iran through a naval blockade targeting vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports.
US Central Command said the measures apply to ships of all nations operating in Iranian coastal areas.
Iran’s military leadership has condemned the blockade as an act of piracy, warning that threats to its maritime security could destabilise shipping across key waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil supplies.
Despite the tensions, a fragile truce between the United States and Iran remains in place, raising cautious optimism in global markets.
Oil prices fell slightly amid hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough, with Brent North Sea crude trading at $94.79 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate at $91.28.
NUCLEAR ENRICHMENT DISPUTE REMAINS KEY HURDLE
At the centre of negotiations is the dispute over Tehran’s nuclear activities.
Trump has insisted that any agreement must permanently prevent Iran from becoming nuclear-armed, an allegation Tehran denies.
Media reports cited by AFP indicate the United States has sought a 20-year suspension of Iran’s uranium enrichment programme, while Iran has proposed a five-year pause, a difference that has so far prevented a breakthrough.
Antonio Guterres reiterated that diplomacy remains essential, stating there is “no military solution" and urging continued engagement.
