US President Donald Trump has been encouraging Hungarians to “get out and vote" for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s reelection as the country prepares to head to the polls on Sunday.
Why Orbán is Trump’s closest ally in Europe, explained.
WHAT TRUMP SAID
Trump praised his close ally as a “truly strong and powerful Leader" in a Truth Social post on Thursday, crediting him with helping reach “new heights of cooperation and spectacular achievement" between the U.S. and Hungary.
“Hungary: GET OUT AND VOTE FOR VIKTOR ORBÁN," Trump wrote. “He is a true friend, fighter, and WINNER, and has my Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-Election as Prime Minister of Hungary — VIKTOR ORBÁN WILL NEVER LET THE GREAT PEOPLE OF HUNGARY DOWN. I AM WITH HIM ALL THE WAY!"
Trump’s post included a picture of the two men from Orbán’s visit to the White House in November, a meeting that centered on the prime minister’s request for an exemption to import Russian oil amid U.S. sanctions.
The endorsement, which the president formally offered in February, comes after Vice President Vance traveled to Budapest this week to shore up support for Orbán ahead of the parliamentary elections on April 12.
Orbán has served as Hungary’s prime minister continuously since 2010 and has become a polarizing figure in global politics. Right-wing admirers hail his “illiberal" model of governance, while critics argue he has undermined the rule of law and press freedom to funnel resources to the country’s oligarchs.
THE BOND BETWEEN TRUMP AND ORBÁN
Orbán is widely considered Trump’s closest ally in Europe. Their relationship is built on shared “illiberal" ideologies and a mutual long-term political alliance that has deepened over the last decade.
Ideological Alignment: Both leaders champion “illiberal democracy," focusing on hardline anti-immigration policies, Christian nationalism, and a shared disdain for globalist institutions like the European Union.
Historical Loyalty: Orbán was the first and only EU leader to endorse Trump’s 2016 presidential bid. He remained a steadfast ally even during Trump’s time out of office, frequently visiting him at Mar-a-Lago.
The “Hungarian Model": The American right now views Hungary as a blueprint for conservative governance. Elements of the Trump administration’s agenda, including its approach to media and universities, echo Orbán’s strategies in Hungary.
Shared Geopolitical Stance: Both have maintained cordial ties with Russia and Vladimir Putin, often standing in opposition to the broader European consensus on aid to Ukraine.
HOW THEY SUPPORT EACH OTHER
- In April 2026, Trump and Vice President JD Vance actively campaigned for Orbán’s re-election. Vance visited Budapest to endorse him, and Trump even spoke to Orbán’s supporters via speakerphone at a rally.
- Trump has pledged to use the “full Economic Might" of the United States to strengthen Hungary’s economy if Orbán remains in power. This includes personal deals, such as exempting Hungary from certain U.S. sanctions on Russian oil—a deal Trump implied is tied specifically to Orbán’s leadership.
- The Trump administration’s 2025 National Security Strategy officially designated the EU as a threat to sovereignty and committed to “cultivating resistance" within European nations, specifically naming Hungary as a key partner in this effort.
- Trump frequently praises Orbán as a “fantastic man" and a “strong leader," using Orbán’s success in Hungary to validate his own political vision for the U.S..
THE POLL
Orbán faces a significant challenge in the April 12, 2026, elections from rival Péter Magyar, whose potential victory could end Orbán’s 16-year rule and remove Trump’s most significant foothold in European politics.
