Two CIA operatives and two Mexican investigators died in a vehicle crash in Chihuahua after an anti drug lab operation, sparking debate over US role in Mexicos security.

Two American officials killed in a vehicle crash in northern Mexico over the weekend have been identified as operatives of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), according to US officials familiar with the matter.

The crash also claimed the lives of two Mexican investigators. Authorities said the team was returning from an operation to dismantle a clandestine drug laboratory linked to criminal groups in the rugged region of Chihuahua.

The confirmation of CIA involvement, first reported by The Washington Post, comes after days of conflicting statements from both US and Mexican authorities regarding the role of American personnel in the anti-narcotics operation.

While the US Embassy did not confirm the identities of the Americans or their agency, it said they were supporting efforts by local authorities to combat cartel activity. The CIA has also declined to comment on the matter.

Initial statements from Mexican officials suggested a joint operation involving US personnel, but those remarks were later walked back. Claudia Sheinbaum said she was not aware of any formal joint mission between US agencies and the state government, though she acknowledged cooperation between the two sides.

The episode has reignited debate over the extent of US involvement in Mexico’s internal security operations, particularly as Donald Trump continues to pressure Mexico to intensify its crackdown on drug cartels.

The issue remains politically sensitive for Sheinbaum, who is balancing cooperation with Washington against concerns over national sovereignty, especially amid threats of potential US intervention and trade-related pressures.

The CIA has in recent years expanded its coordination with Mexican authorities as part of broader US efforts to curb the flow of illicit drugs. Previously, Sheinbaum had acknowledged that US drone surveillance flights over Mexico were conducted at her government’s request.
