Honoring its ‘deep historic roots’, the United States has announced that it will be dropping ‘INDO’ from the name of its oldest and largest unified command – the US Pacific Command, which was until now the ‘US Indo-Pacific Command’. America’s Department of War, which itself used to be called ‘Department of Defense’, announced this development today (as per Indian Standard Time).
This is in fact a restoration of its earlier name. From the earlier acronym of USINDOPASCOM, it will now be called ‘USPASCOM’.
“Restoring the legacy USPACOM designation honors the command’s deep historical roots, fostering a sense of pride and collective spirit among all who serve in the Pacific," said the command in a tweet posted on X.
The 33rd President of the United States, Harry S. Truman, established the command on January 1, 1947. For 70 years, the command operated with the name – USPASCOM.
It is the oldest and largest unified combatant command of the US armed forces, according to the tweet.
“From its critical role in establishing the post-WWII regional security architecture to its coordination of joint forces during the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and countless humanitarian operations, the USPACOM namesake carries decades of military heritage and enduring regional partnerships," the tweet said.
