Mediators working to broker a truce between the United States and Iran moved a step closer on Wednesday to extending the ceasefire, as negotiations resumed to salvage the fragile agreement before it expires next week.

Ahead of the two-week ceasefire’s expiry on April 22, mediators are attempting to work out a compromise on three key sticking points that derailed direct talks last weekend.

A regional official involved in the mediation efforts told the Associated Press that the United States and Iran had given an “in principle agreement" to extend the truce to allow more time for diplomacy.

The official added that efforts are underway to resolve differences over Iran’s nuclear programme, the Strait of Hormuz and compensation for wartime damages, even as the US blockade on Iranian ports and renewed Iranian threats continue to imperil the week-old agreement.
