The United States has announced a phased closing of its consulate in Peshawar, citing “safety" of diplomatic personnel and efficient resource management. The moves came eight weeks after hundreds of people stormed the US consulate in Karachi over the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Eight protesters were killed as security forces opened fire.

In a statement, the US Department of State said that responsibility for diplomatic engagement with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will transfer to the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad.

“This decision reflects our commitment to the safety of our diplomatic personnel and efficient resource management. While our physical presence in Peshawar is changing, the Administration’s policy priorities in Pakistan remain steadfast. We will continue to engage meaningfully with the people and officials of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to foster economic ties, promote regional security, and advance the interests of the American people.

What’s Happening In Peshawar?

Peshawar is the capital and largest city of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province. The security situation in this province has deteriorated significantly in early 2026, culminating in what has been described as a “state of open war" between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The province remains the epicentre of militant violence in the country, primarily involving the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and ISIS-K.
