Donald Trump said the war involving Iran would end “very quickly,” claiming Tehran was eager for a deal and predicting oil prices would “plummet” once an agreement was reached.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday claimed that efforts were underway to end the ongoing conflict involving Iran, while also warning that Washington could launch fresh strikes if negotiations failed.
Trump said Iran was eager for a deal and predicted a sharp decline in global oil prices if an agreement was reached.
Speaking publicly, Trump said, “We’re blowing it away. We’re blowing everything away. And we’re going to end that war very quickly."
He further added, “They want to make a deal so badly, they’re tired of…" before saying that the conflict should have been addressed years ago.
“This should have happened for 47 years. Somebody should have done something about it. And it’s going to happen, and it’s going to happen fast."
Trump also linked the conflict to global energy markets, claiming that oil prices would soon fall sharply.
“You’re going to see oil prices plummet. They’re going to come down. There’s so much oil out there. They’re going to come plummeting down," he said.
TRUMP SAYS US MAY STRIKE IRAN AGAIN
According to a Reuters report, Trump later said at the White House that the United States had come close to launching another attack on Iran before the move was delayed. Reuters reported that Trump stated, “I was an hour away from making the decision to go today." The report said the remarks came a day after Trump announced he had paused a planned resumption of hostilities following a fresh proposal from Tehran aimed at ending the US-Israeli war.
Reuters further reported that Trump claimed Iranian leaders were “begging for a deal" and warned that another US attack could happen within days if no agreement was reached. The report noted that the United States has been attempting to end the war it launched with Israel nearly three months ago, while Trump has repeatedly claimed that a deal with Tehran was close.
OIL PRICES, POLITICAL PRESSURE AND DIPLOMATIC TALKS
Reuters said Trump is facing mounting political pressure domestically to secure an agreement that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil shipments. The report added that rising fuel prices and declining approval ratings ahead of congressional elections have intensified pressure on the administration.
The Reuters report also noted that oil prices settled lower after US Vice President JD Vance said that Washington and Tehran had made “a lot of progress" in negotiations and neither side wanted a renewed military campaign. “We’re in a pretty good spot here," Vance said, according to Reuters.
Speaking at a White House briefing, Vance reportedly acknowledged challenges in dealing with Iran’s divided leadership. “It’s not sometimes totally clear what the negotiating position of the team is," he said, while adding that the United States was trying to clearly communicate its own “red lines." Reuters reported that Vance also said one objective of Trump’s strategy was preventing a wider nuclear arms race in the region.
IRAN WARNS OF ‘DECISIVE MILITARY RESPONSE’
In Tehran, Reuters reported that Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian parliament’s national security committee, claimed Trump paused the attack because he realised any action against Iran would trigger a “decisive military response."
Iranian state media, according to Reuters, said Tehran’s latest peace proposal included ending hostilities across multiple fronts, including Lebanon, withdrawal of US forces from areas near Iran, reparations for damage caused by US-Israeli attacks, lifting sanctions, releasing frozen Iranian funds, and ending the US naval blockade. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi reportedly outlined the demands in comments carried by IRNA news agency.
However, Reuters noted that the reported terms appeared similar to Iran’s earlier proposal, which Trump had dismissed last week as “garbage."
CEASEFIRE HOLDS AMID TENSIONS
Reuters reported that the ceasefire between Iran and the US-Israeli alliance has largely held since early April, though tensions remain high in the region. The report said drones had recently been launched from Iraq towards Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, allegedly by Iran or allied groups.
The Reuters report also cited the Wall Street Journal as saying the United States seized an Iran-linked oil tanker, the Skywave, in the Indian Ocean overnight after it had been sanctioned earlier this year for transporting Iranian oil.
Reuters added that Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have repeatedly said the war was launched to curb Iran’s regional influence, dismantle its nuclear programme and missile capabilities, and weaken Tehran-backed militias. However, the report noted that Iran still retains stockpiles of highly enriched uranium and continues to maintain missile, drone and proxy capabilities across the region.
