Rather than worrying about US barriers, BYD says it is now focused on expanding production to meet surging orders elsewhere.

BYD overtook Tesla last year as the largest seller of electric vehicles worldwide.
Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD said that it can continue growing without access to the United States, as rising global fuel prices and stronger overseas demand create new opportunities for the world’s biggest EV seller.
The company, which overtook Tesla last year as the largest seller of electric vehicles worldwide, said demand in markets such as Europe, Brazil and the United Kingdom has become a greater priority than breaking into the US market.
“We survive and are successful without the US market today," BYD executive vice president Stella Li said at the Beijing Auto Show. Her comments come as higher oil prices linked to the war in Iran have increased interest in electric vehicles globally, with consumers seeking cheaper alternatives to petrol-powered cars.
“Consumers feel the daily savings when oil prices increase. EVs help them save money every day," Li said.
Rather than worrying about US barriers, BYD says it is now focused on expanding production to meet surging orders elsewhere.
“Actually, we are now suffering insufficient capacity. Our demand is much higher than what we can supply," Li said.
Chinese automakers have faced steep tariffs and growing regulatory scrutiny in the United States, where officials have raised concerns over state subsidies, data security and national security risks tied to Chinese-made vehicles.
Those restrictions have largely shut Chinese EV brands out of one of the world’s biggest car markets. But BYD argues that booming demand in other regions is offsetting that loss.
The company is also betting on new technology to widen its lead. BYD recently promoted its “flash charging" system, which can add hundreds of kilometres of range in minutes, addressing one of the biggest concerns among buyers over charging times.
At this year’s Beijing Auto Show, Chinese manufacturers dominated the spotlight, showcasing rapid advances in batteries, software and autonomous systems.
Li said BYD’s strength extends beyond vehicles.
“We are not just a car company. We produce one-third of global smartphone components, we are a leading player in battery storage, solar panels, buses, and trucks. So BYD is an ecosystem," she said.
Still, competition inside China remains fierce, with dozens of EV makers engaged in aggressive price wars that have squeezed profit margins.
BYD’s domestic sales have fallen for seven consecutive months, even as its European sales jumped 156 percent in the first quarter of the year.
Li said the pressure would eventually force weaker rivals out of the market.
“History suggests not all will survive," she said.
