A major security scare unfolded near the White House on Saturday evening after a gunman opened fire near a security checkpoint while President Donald Trump was inside the complex. The incident took place near a White House security checkpoint shortly after 6 PM local time, when the suspect allegedly pulled a firearm from a bag and opened fire at officers guarding the perimeter, according to the US Secret Service.
The suspect was later shot dead by the US Secret Service. Let’s take a look at the timeline of the event:
6:00 PM (Local Time): The area around 17th Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue, close to the White House security perimeter, was crowded with tourists, journalists and security personnel. President Trump was inside the White House at the time.
Around 6:15 PM: According to reports, an armed man approached the checkpoint carrying a bag. He allegedly pulled out a gun and opened fire at officers guarding the area.
Moments Later: Secret Service officers immediately returned fire. Witnesses nearby reported hearing multiple gunshots as panic spread and people rushed to take cover.
Immediate Lockdown: The White House complex and nearby press areas were briefly placed under lockdown. Journalists near the North Lawn were told to shelter in place while surrounding roads were sealed off.
Suspect Shot Dead: The gunman was injured in the exchange of fire and later died at a hospital, the Secret Service said. No law enforcement personnel were hurt.
Bystander Injured: Officials confirmed that one bystander was also injured during the shooting. Investigators are still trying to determine how the person was hit.
Investigation Underway: The FBI and the Secret Service have launched a joint investigation into the incident. Authorities have not yet revealed the suspect’s identity or possible motive.
