An Indian national working as a senior manager at The Walt Disney Company has been sentenced to prison in Russia after authorities found cannabis-infused gummies in his luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport.
According to Russian state news agency TASS, Daterao Jugal Sudhir was convicted of narcotics possession and drug smuggling following his arrest earlier this year.
The court sentenced Sudhir to two-and-a-half years in prison and imposed a 30,000-ruble fine, significantly lower than the punishment sought by prosecutors. State prosecutors had requested a sentence of six-and-a-half years in prison along with a 500,000-ruble fine.
Arrest at Moscow Airport
Sudhir was detained in January after arriving in Moscow from Qatar.
During a customs inspection at Sheremetyevo International Airport, officials discovered gummies containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — the psychoactive compound found in cannabis — among his belongings.
Russian authorities subsequently charged him under the country’s strict narcotics laws, which prohibit the possession and transportation of cannabis-based products.
Defence Cites Medical Reasons
During the trial, Sudhir’s legal team argued that the gummies had been prescribed for medical purposes following brain surgery.
The defence maintained that the THC-infused products were intended solely for personal medical use and were not meant for distribution or sale.
Sudhir himself told the court that he used the gummies only as part of his medical treatment.
Despite these arguments, the court found him guilty of both possession and smuggling of narcotic substances.
Senior Role at Disney
Public records show that Sudhir holds a senior management position at The Walt Disney Company, where he oversees more than 20 projects.
His responsibilities reportedly include partnership integrations involving Disney+ and the streaming platform Hulu, making him a key executive in Disney’s digital and streaming operations.
Russia’s Strict Cannabis Laws
The case highlights the risks faced by international travellers carrying cannabis-based products across borders.
While THC-infused products are legal for medical or recreational use in several countries and jurisdictions, Russia maintains some of the world’s strictest anti-drug laws.
Russian authorities have repeatedly warned that travellers remain subject to domestic narcotics legislation regardless of whether substances are legally prescribed or purchased elsewhere.
A Reminder for International Travellers
The conviction serves as another reminder of how differing drug laws can create legal complications for travellers.
Even products legally prescribed in one country may lead to criminal prosecution if brought into jurisdictions where cannabis remains prohibited.
For Russia, authorities have consistently maintained a zero-tolerance approach toward narcotics offences, including cases involving small quantities intended for personal or medical use.
