White House artificial intelligence policy adviser Sriram Krishnan has announced that he will step down from his role at the end of June, marking another high-profile departure from US President Donald Trump’s administration. Announcing on Saturday, Krishnan said he plans to take a break before focusing on “large challenges facing America on AI."

He did not share further details about his next project, saying he would announce a later stage. In the same post, Krishnan praised Trump, stating that America is “leading the AI race" because of the US president.

In a post on X, Krishnan said, “I’ll be leaving my role at the White House at the end of this month. After a break, I’ll be working on helping tackle some of the large challenges facing America on AI (more on that later). It is hard to express how big a privilege it has been to serve the American people and how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to do so."

He credited Trump for the country’s progress in artificial intelligence, stating, “Without his leadership, we would not be leading in the AI race."

Reflecting on his 18 months in the role, Krishnan outlined several initiatives he helped shape, including the American AI Action Plan, AI acceleration partnerships aimed at strengthening the American AI stack, and the National AI Policy Framework under the Artificial Intelligence executive order.

Who Is Sriram Krishnan?

Sriram Krishnan, an Indian-born technology investor, emerged as one of the key figures behind artificial intelligence policy in Donald Trump’s administration. He entered the White House on January 20, 2025, as Trump’s second term began, after being named Senior White House Policy Advisor on Artificial Intelligence in 2024.

His appointment triggered a backlash from some members of the MAGA movement, with Trump ally Laura Loomer criticising his previous remarks in support of immigration reforms. Despite the controversy, the Chennai-born immigrant went on to play a central role in shaping the administration’s AI agenda and became one of Silicon Valley’s most influential representatives within the White House.

Krishnan studied at Chennai’s SRM Engineering College before building a career across major technology companies, including Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter and Snap. He later joined venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, where he became a prominent investor. He also served as a trusted adviser to Elon Musk during Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, now known as X.

According to The Washington Post, Krishnan was among the technology advisers involved in drafting an executive order that restricted states’ ability to regulate artificial intelligence. White House spokesman Kush Desai told the newspaper that Krishnan had been a “critical asset" to the administration.

“We look forward to continuing to work with Sriram in his new venture," Desai added, without divulging details about Krishnan’s “new venture."
