Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing on Monday assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi that his country’s territory would not be used against India’s security interests as the two leaders held wide-ranging talks to strengthen bilateral ties in trade, defence and energy.

PM Modi welcomed Hlaing at the Hyderabad House for crucial talks during the latter’s five-day visit to India, which is being considered crucial in reshaping the ties between India and Myanmar against the backdrop of Chinese influence in Southeast Asia.

What Did PM Modi, Hlaing Discuss?

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri informed reporters that a detailed discussion took place between the two leaders on wide-ranging issues like trade, defence, security, and border management. Both countries agreed on enhancing close cooperation.

During the talks, both sides emphasised the need to prevent any activity detrimental to each other’s security interests within their respective territories. Hlaing reiterated that Myanmar’s territory would not be used against India’s security interests.

Myanmar also assured India that it will do “everything" to push two key connectivity projects, the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway, which are stalled due to active hostilities in the Southeast Asian nation

Meanwhile, PM Modi also reiterated his support for Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He conveyed that India remains Myanmar’s trusted neighbour, a reliable partner and steadfast first responder in times of crisis, in line with India’s Neighbourhood First, Act East and MAHASAGAR policies.

Responding to a question on Suu Kyi, Misri said PM Modi did raise the issue with the visiting president, and that the discussion was largely in the context of the peace process that has been underway in Myanmar.

Myanmar President’s Visit To India

The visit marks Min Aung Hlaing’s first foreign trip since assuming office as Myanmar’s president earlier this year. It also comes as Myanmar seeks to emerge from years of diplomatic isolation while India looks to strengthen its influence and dilute China’s outsized influence on Myanmar, while seeking access to the country’s deposits of critical rare earths.

One of the biggest factors driving the visit is China. India sees Myanmar as a critical neighbour in its efforts to counterbalance China’s growing presence in the region. India is particularly interested in expanding cooperation in trade, infrastructure, connectivity and access to strategic resources.

Since Myanmar also shares a 1,600 km border with India, cooperation between the two countries is being seen as crucial to maintaining stability along the border, particularly from insurgent groups.
