Authorities in Bangkok have seized more than 100,000 counterfeit products worth nearly $1 million during a raid at the well-known MBK Center. The operation was part of a wider effort to tackle intellectual property violations after US trade officials recently flagged the mall as a major market for fake goods.

The raid took place on March 13 and involved officials from Thailand’s commerce authorities along with special-investigation police.

The action followed the mall’s inclusion in the 2025 Review of Notorious Markets for Counterfeiting and Piracy released by the Office of the United States Trade Representative earlier this month.

The report identified the shopping complex as a place where counterfeit items are widely sold, reported Bloomberg.

According to Auramon Supthaweethum, officials discovered a large number of fake products that violated trademarks and copyrights. Most of the items included bags, shoes, clothing and other fashion goods designed to imitate well-known international brands.

Photographs shared by the Department of Intellectual Property showed officials packing the seized goods into dozens of large boxes and rubbish bags. Some images also showed shoes carrying the logo of Nike among the confiscated items.

The operation highlights the importance of protecting Thailand’s retail reputation, especially as tourism remains a major part of the economy. Tourism contributes around 12 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product, and Bangkok’s shopping centres attract millions of international visitors every year.

However, tourist arrivals have recently slowed, falling to around 33 million in 2025. Authorities had set a target of 36.7 million visitors, but that goal is now under pressure due to global uncertainties, including tensions in the Middle East.

The crackdown is also seen as part of Thailand’s effort to strengthen cooperation with the United States, its largest export market, particularly as the two countries continue discussions related to trade and tariffs.
