North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has announced plans to “beef up our state’s nuclear forces at an exponential rate" during a visit to inspect the country’s new nuclear plant on Tuesday.

According to Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim said the country’s “weapons-grade nuclear material production capacity more than doubled" over the past five years, attributing the gains to the country’s nuclear scientists. The site of the plant has not been disclosed.

He further said “potential threats and unpredictable long-term crises further highlight the urgency" of expanding the nuclear deterrent “both in quality and quantity and in a sustained and accelerated way".

According to CNN, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported in March that North Korea has at least two active nuclear enrichment plants, one in Yongbyon and another in Kangson.

This comes as the US is working to strike a deal to end the ongoing war with Iran and get Tehran to give up nuclear materials that may be used to develop into nuclear weapons.
