Pakistan’s security received another massive jolt after Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants launched a deadly attack on a police checkpost in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district, killing 13 cops and injuring several others.

It was another bloodbath in the restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province as TTP militants launched a suicide attack on Saturday that reduced the police station in Bannu to rubble before ambushing police personnel, sources told CNN-News18.

Several armed fighters and a suicide bomber used an explosives-laden vehicle to level the Fatah Khail security checkpost. As other police officials intervened, nearly 100 militants ambushed them, resulting in casualties.

Nearby civilian areas suffered heavy damage in the attack, with several women and children among the injured as the blasts damaged nearby homes.

Pakistan Security Forces Launch Counterattack

As firing continued till late at night, rescue teams reached the site and dug through the debris to find bodies. Ambulances from civil hospitals also arrived at the scene, and a state of emergency was declared in government hospitals in the area.

Pakistani security forces launched a counteroffensive against the TTP militants following the massive attack. Videos showed TTP militants and police personnel engaging in heavy gunfire, while the security checkpost was reduced to rubble.

According to initial reports, Pakistani Security forces cordoned off the area and relief operations continued till early morning. Authorities said the death toll is expected to rise and the full scale of the operation would become clear after the security operation concluded.

Similar assaults have previously been linked to armed groups operating near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. This particular incident comes months after growing hostilities between Pakistan and Afghanistan escalated into the worst fighting between the two allies, resulting in hundreds of deaths.

Security concerns have long strained relations between the two neighbours. Islamabad accuses Afghan authorities of sheltering armed groups like the TTP, which are responsible for a rise in deadly cross-border attacks. The ruling Taliban have rejected these claims, arguing that militancy within Pakistan is an internal matter beyond Afghanistan’s responsibility.
