At least 18 people, including 10 children, were killed after a truck carrying Afghan families returning from Pakistan overturned in eastern Afghanistan, as per AFP. The accident occurred on the road linking the eastern city of Jalalabad with the capital, Kabul, according to Abdul Malik Niazay, spokesperson for the governor of Laghman province.
“Eighteen people have died, including 10 children, five women and three men. In addition, 29 people have been injured," Niazay told Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The truck was transporting Afghan families who had been living in Pakistan and were returning home, he said.
Deadly traffic accidents are common in Afghanistan, where poor road conditions, dangerous driving practices and limited traffic regulation contribute to a high number of crashes. The incident comes as increasing numbers of Afghans return from neighboring Pakistan following a tougher stance by Pakistani authorities toward Afghan migrants and refugees.
According to figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration, more than 447,000 Afghans have returned from Pakistan since the beginning of the year.
Afghanistan has witnessed several major road accidents involving returning migrants in recent years. In August last year, a bus carrying Afghans returning from Iran collided with two other vehicles in western Afghanistan, killing 78 people, including 19 children.
