A senior aide to US President Donald Trump has proposed that Iran be replaced by Italy at the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, according to a report by the Financial Times.

Paolo Zampolli said he had suggested the idea to both Trump and Gianni Infantino, arguing that Italy’s football pedigree makes a strong case.

“I confirm I have suggested to Trump and Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup… With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion," Zampolli said.

World Cup 2026: Expanded Format, Multiple Hosts

The 2026 tournament will be jointly hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico, marking the first time three nations will co-host the competition. It will also be the first World Cup to feature an expanded 48-team format, up from 32 teams in previous editions.

The tournament is expected to be one of the largest sporting events in history, with matches spread across multiple cities in North America and millions of fans anticipated to attend.

Italy’s Legacy And Recent Struggles

Italy national football team remains one of the most successful teams in World Cup history, having won the tournament four times (1934, 1938, 1982, and 2006).

However, the Azzurri have struggled in recent years, notably failing to qualify for both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups—an unprecedented setback for the football powerhouse. Despite this, Italy remains a strong force in international football, having won the UEFA Euro 2020 title.

Uncertainty Over Participation

There has been no official response from FIFA regarding Zampolli’s suggestion, and it remains unclear under what circumstances such a replacement could take place.

Iran had qualified for the tournament through the Asian qualifiers, and any change in participation would likely involve complex regulatory and political considerations.

The proposal comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions, though FIFA traditionally maintains that sporting decisions are independent of political developments.
